With the Band by Jean Haus5/24/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Synths galore, drums, and even the previously avoided guitar flit and layer in such a way that the record feels spacious, despite its thick electronic arrangements. It’s this opening that predicts the enjoyable surprises on Light Noise: things like a drum loop that recalls Radioheads Reckoner and a harmonic haaa that echoes the similarly infectious if more subdued vocals in Yeasayers Madder Red, both of which mark a more matured blend of melodic electronic rock than the band previously employed. The dirty synth that introduces album opener You Made My Radar envelopes with its power, sounding like an electronic blow to a conch shell. ![]() Self-described as a concoction of Kraftwerk, the Beach Boys, and Sonic Youth steeped in a solution of glitchy noise, San Franciscos Maus Haus has been busy since the release of 2009s Lark Marvels. Theyve downsized their lineup from seven to four, decided the guitar isnt such a bad instrument after all, and signed to Lavish Habits, the label behind Light Noise, their new seven-song EP. ![]()
